The main tasks to carry out during the project are:
Task 1. Identify and analyse the existing scientific literature on VET success and drop pathways. Carry out a systematic (non-narrative) review of the literature on the subject. Campbell Systematic Review Protocol will be used, so as to ensure that explicit and transparent methods for the collection and analysis of the documents will be implemented. Timing: last trimester 2014 to the end of 2015.
Task 2. Develop a map of VET dropout in Spain based on the available statistics on participation, graduation and dropout. Indicators to an analysis by regions and professional families as well as comparison with other levels of the Spanish education system and data from other countries will be included. Timing: last trimester 2014 to mid-2016.
Task 3. To analyse the relationship between the dropout in VET and the characteristics of the centres (size, location, educational offer, teachers, students, ownership, etc.). The analysis will be conducted based on the statistics of the VET centres of the two areas in which the project will be implemented (Majorca and Barcelona). Timing: last trimester 2015 to mid-2017.
Task 4. Develop case studies of at least four VET schools with low dropout rates. This activity will allow us to deepen the knowledge of educational processes and factors that enable successful VET itineraries. The following dimensions will be analysed: 1) the general organization of the school and the educational project, 2) the climate of school and classroom, 3) the courses and specializations offered and the approach to curriculum content, 4) teaching strategies and classroom assessment, 5) communication and connection between students and teachers, 6) teacher expectations, and 7) prevention practices and intervention against absenteeism, failure and students’ dropout. Timing: last trimester 2016 to the end of 2017.
Task 5. Conduct a longitudinal study of VET students’ success and dropout pathways. The longitudinal study will be carried out from a representative sample of students who start their training during the 2015-2016 course, in the territories in which the fieldwork will be developed (Majorca and Barcelona). Timing: last trimester 2014 to the end of 2017.
Task 6. Carry out biographical in-depth interviews with key participants in the longitudinal study. Timing: second trimester 2016 until the end of 2017.
Task 7. Carry out focus groups with VET teachers and experts to analyse the results of the project and preparing proposals. A minimum of four focus groups formed by teachers and experts will be implemented. Timing: second trimester 2016 until the end of 2017.
Task 8. Elaborate materials and resources aimed at strengthening the conditions for success and avoid abandonment amongst VET students. We foresee the development of materials and resources whose content will depend on the development of the research activities in the following topics: a) The phenomenon of dropout in VET: situation analysis; b) Success Itineraries and pathways in VET: examples of good practices; c) Strategies to prevent dropout in VET. Timing: second trimester 2016 until the end of 2017.
Task 9. Dissemination of the project.
